SOLOIST SPOTLIGHT: Andrew T. Chan – Harp
Applauded by the National Post as having “a rare charisma”, harpist Andrew Chan has performed across Canada, USA, and in China. He performs as Principal Harp with the Toronto Concert Orchestra and continues to be invited by other Canadian orchestras and have been featured frequently as their soloists. Enthusiastic to expand the harp's repertoire, he works with composers closely, premiering and advocating new Canadian works. After two years of collaboration with Constantine Caravassilis, their newest project has been completed: Hiraeth --- a four movement Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. This July, he will present Canadian concert music on an international stage at the World Harp Congress 2017 that will take place in Hong Kong, premiering "Three Dances for Ocyrrhoe", another composition written for him by Caravassilis. He passionately promotes the appreciation of the harp in both of its performance and education. As a dedicated teacher, he founded Harp Sinfonia, a multiple harp ensemble featuring many of his students. His enthusiastic pedagogy has allowed many of his students to become consistent winners of awards and scholarships. He is grateful for his training with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific and the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. He was a recipient of scholarship from the Canada Arts Council, and credits his inspiration from the legendary Alice Chalifoux (principal harp, Cleveland Symphony Orchestra) whom he studied with at the prestigious Salzedo Harp Colony (Maine, USA), and Elizabeth Volpѐ Bligh at the University of British Columbia School of Music. He received his Artist Diploma in Harp Performance from the University of Toronto. |
